Annamrita Foundation (earlier known as ISKCON Food Relief Foundation) was formed in 2004, to address two of the most important challenges of India – hunger, and education by providing unlimited, wholesome food to attract children to schools, retain them and then focus on children’s holistic development. The ultimate goal is to ensure that no child in India is hungry and every child gets access to good health, wholesome food, and schooling.
Annamrita is now the second largest Mid Day Meal provider in India and serves over 1.2 million Mid-Day Meals daily to school-going children from its fully automated centralized kitchens spread across 21 locations in 8 states, Maharashtra, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal & Tripura. We adhere to ISO 22000:2018 food safety standards. This program has reaped particular benefits in the sector of ‘girl-child education in the country. Moreover, by serving a common meal to all and that too on a common platform, the program has been instrumental in helping children unite and rise above culture and caste differences.
By seeing the reputation and quality of service, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) approached Annamrita, then ISKCON Food Relief Foundation to serve Mid-Day Meals in its schools and also agreed to provide one of its centralized kitchens in North Kolkata for centralized cooking purposes. In 2012, Annamrita stated its centralized kitchen operation from Bagbazar in North Kolkata with 30 schools and 2500 children.
In those days, only 3 vehicles were sufficient to cater to 30 schools, over the period of time, the KMC handed over more schools to Annamrita and now Annamrita serves around 10000 meals daily to 166 schools and SSKs across Kolkata from Tallah to Tollygunge and Bagbazar to Bypass. In the year 2020, Ananmrita automated its centralized kitchen in Bagabzar to cater to the increasing number of meals.
